Directed and produced by renowned dance teacher, choreographer and international ballet examiner, Sinead Murphy, students from Cork School of Dance will perform A Frozen Heart from Friday December 6th to Sunday December 8th 2019.
A Frozen Heart is a beautiful story inspired by a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, that centres on the struggles of fear and love.
Students, from Cork School of Dance, will perform in this magical frozen adventure which tells the story of a fearless young princess, Anna, who sets off on a journey to find her estranged sister, Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped their kingdom in an eternal winter. Anna leaves, handsome, Prince Hans, whom she met and fell in love with at Elsa’s coronation, in charge of their kingdom while she sets off on her journey to find her precious sister. On her adventure to find Elsa, Anna meets a rugged iceman Kristoff and his loyal reindeer whom she persuades to help her find her sister. They meet penguins, polar bears, wolves and ice fairies on their journey including the naïve and funny snowman, Olaf.
Anna and Elsa were once very close but because of Elsa’s fear of her icy powers the two sisters drifted apart. Anna loves her sister and desperately wants to find her. Elsa’s powers grew stronger as time went by and when Anna reaches Elsa’s ice palace, she accidentally freezes Anna’s heart. What will the fate of the two sisters be? Will Prince Hans save Anna from death? Will Kristoff win the heart of the girl he has fallen in love with? Will Elsa save her young sister?
AN ACT OF TRUE LOVE WILL THAW A FROZEN HEART.
The role of Elsa, will be danced by the talented Susie Moran, a trainee ballet teacher at Cork School of Dance, a member of Cork Youth Ballet Company and an apprentice dancer with Cork City Ballet. Anna will be danced by the charming Ella Burke, a senior dancer in the school, who is also a dancer with Cork Youth Ballet Company and has also danced in recent Cork City Ballet productions.
The roles of Kristoff and Hans will be danced by Luke Walsh and Glenn Singleton, who appear y kind permission of Aideen McAuliffe, Principal and Director of Centre Stage School, Mallow. The talented and dedicated students from Cork School of Dance perform a huge array of roles throughout the show. All danced to a huge variety of music.
The stage at Firkin Crane will be magically lit and transformed by Tim Feehily, whose credits include Cork School of Dance Productions Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast in Firkin Crane, Cork City Ballet’s productions of Giselle, Swan Lake and the Nutcracker in Cork Opera House, the Everyman Christmas Pantomimes Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Aladdin, Cork Youth Ballet Company’s Out of the Black, Breaking Pointe, Pulse and Hanging On. Aon, Salomé and Linger directed and choreographed by Breandain de Gallai, and Rites of Spring which will be performed in St Petersburg in November.
Cork School of Dance which was founded by Sinead Murphy in 2009 offers a range of classes in ballet, modern, jazz and contemporary dance. Sinead trained with the late Joan Denise Moriarty and taught in her school for many years until she opened up Cork School of Dance. Sinead is also Artistic Director of Cork Youth Ballet. Cork School of Dance and Cork Youth Ballet are based in Firkin Crane. Sinéad is also an international ballet examiner for the ISTD and has taught and adjudicated at their annual ballet competition in the UK.

Emma’s workshop will introduce you to her creative practice. Through improvisation, we will work with physical and energetic states supported by carefully selected music to unleash new realms for the body’s imagination. We will generate fresh and surprising movement that is deeply connected to emotion, sensation and the desire to offer something to the world through the body, with intention and recklessness.
Emma started creating shows in 2010, following a sabbatical as a ballet dancer during which she obtained a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies and Russian from Trinity College, Dublin. In 2015 she formed United Fall, under which she collaborates with artists from dance, music, theatre, photography and design on an artistic path that is not limited to dance, but one which moves freely between all of these forms in order to serve the art. Previous productions include Orfeo ed Euridice (2018), Girl Song (2017), Dancehall (2015), Tundra (2014), Dogs (2012), Listowel Syndrome (2010). Her work has been commissioned by Dublin Dance Festival, Irish Arts Center and has been co-produced by Dublin Theatre Festival, Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival and Centre de Développement Chorégraphique, Toulouse. She was an associate artist with Dance Ireland and Artist in Residence at Visual 2012-2018. Most recent theatre collaborations include Arlington (2016) with Enda Walsh and Danse, Morob (2017) with Olwen Fouéré. Martin was a drummer in the DIY no-wave band You can call me Frances. United Fall is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland.

“The camp is the space that is opened when the state of exception begins to become the rule” Giorgio Agamben, Philosopher
Inspired by the experience of making work with refugees and asylum seekers in Direct Provision, State of Exception is a powerful and raw multi-cultural interplay of dance, music and text. Featuring a cast of outstanding Irish and international performers this compelling and original dance work delves into the world of asylum seekers to understand, to connect, to challenge and tear down the walls and borders that divide us, finding home in the common that binds us all.
Catherine Young has been making and touring work to critical acclaim since 2011, creating powerful, percussive, physical, primal work that shows all shades of the human condition – its grit, edge, truth, honesty and beauty.
“This is Irish dance making at its best; political, urgent and intelligent.. go see it.” – RTÉ
Proudly funded by The Arts Council, supported by Backstage Theatre, Shawbrook, Siamsa Tire, Kerry County Council, Dance Limerick, Creative Ireland, Town Hall Theatre, Firkin Crane, glór, Pavilion Theatre and Lime Tree Theatre.

OBJECT DANCE – A workshop with Emily Aoibheann
What challenges and opportunities do we experience when we introduce objects and textures to our physical performance practice? How do we create new choreographies that consider the object as a dancer, rather than as an inanimate frame containing a more primary idea.
In this workshop, Emily Aoibheann will share methodologies and approaches for creating with objects (sculpture, music, texture, text and dance) as an integrative performance practice that challenges conventional approaches to performance design.
Drawing inspiration from bio-technology and philosophies on microbial and ecological paradigms, the workshop uses aerial fabric to explore objects, textures and surfaces, in multiple dimensions and directions. This workshop is suitable for dancers, aerialists, visual artists, designers, philosophers and scientists. Considering our relationship with each other and the world, as semi-permeable and symbiotic, the workshop offers unconventional and creative ways of thinking, perceiving and making.
EMILY AOIBHEANN is an artist based in Dublin, Ireland. Although her expertise lies in circus and aerial, her varied background leads to a creative, collaborative and original integration of multiple art forms.
A pioneer of aerial dance in Ireland, Emily co-founded award winning PaperDolls Performance Company in 2010. She went on to produce Object Piggy in 2014/15 and presented internationally in Prague and Macedonia with Papaveracea. In 2017 she collaboarted with artist Liing Heaney on work in progress Smiling Devil as part of Dublin Theatre Festival’s In Development strand. Emily continued working with Liing to create a twin production project on civilisation and nature in 2019. Part one, Sorry Gold is an experimental design and aerial dance performance which premiered at Project Arts Centre, as part of Dublin Fringe Festival in September, followed by part two, Mother of Pearl, at Project Arts Centre in November. Mother of Pearl marked a change in Emily’s orientation on aerial as central to her work, instead focusing on aspects of music, dance and the art of handbalance for this production.
Emily is co-founder of Cat’s Paw Experimental Aerial Dance Meeting, the second of which is due to take place in Košice, Slovakia in January 2020. Emily is founder and director of Creation Aerial Research & Ideas Studio in Dublin.
