ABOUT:

“To us, life with its rhythms and cycles is dance, and dance is life” A.M Opoku

Part history, part autobiographical “Radio Hermitage” recounts the special way Ksenia became acquainted with jazz. In April 2005 when Ksenia was 16, her mother died from cancer. On the tragic day of her mothers death, while passing by her room to say her last goodbyes, she heard the radio playing. Soft, deep, calling. That was Radio Hermitage, a local jazz station named after the world famous museum in Saint Petersburg.

Ksenia found great comfort in the radio that day, and the following year the radio was on 24 hours a day. The music was a sort of salvation. So free, so vivid, so daring and touching. Every time the sound of a rim shot came through in driving swing tune, it brought joy and excitement to her. Trumpet solos made her feet jump into dance and singers spoke directly to her heart! Even when asleep Ksenia was listening to it, recording the station on tape, ensuring never to miss new tunes.

On Radio Hermitage they didn’t announce any names. Later on in life she found she was listening to Lester Young, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, and so many of the jazz greats she still loves. Several years later, in 2009, Ksenia got introduced to swing dancing, the dance that was actually done to jazz & swing music, the one she was listening to on the radio for years. A new world opened itself to Ksenia. She graduated university with philosophy degree, and spent university playing in the “Uventa”musical theatre under director Victor Nikolaev. She soon quit theatre and dived into the ocean of jazz dance and music. In 2010 getting her first proposal to come teach and perform in autumnal Paris at a Charleston Atelier festival, a childhood dream! It is the discovery and salvation found in Jazz that Radio Hermitage explores. The same salvation that has been found throughout the history of American music at times of great hardship, from Slavery, to the great depression, people have turned to Jazz as an escape.

The show is accompanied by a live quartet of the best Irish jazz musicians under the musical direction of David Duffy (bass), Cormac McCarthy (piano), Davie Ryan (drums), Ken Marshall (sax).
