Wordless stories – Body Voice Workshop with John Scott
Programmed by Megan and Jessica Kennedy of Junk Ensemble, Cork City Dance Artist in Residence at Firkin Crane.
John Scott leads a workshop exploring creation and development of material, spatial awareness, performance state, text, dance, wordless stories. Scott, founder and director of Irish Modern Dance Theatre, is known for tireless experimentation. Scott will engage in the processes he uses in the creative process for developing material for performance. Scott utilises the techniques he has learned from his own research and his performances with choreographers/artists as varied as Meredith Monk, Sara Rudner, Thomas Lehmen and The Living Theatre. Scott also undertakes award winning work with Victims of Torture and refugees and with artists in Palestine. Scott has taught workshops at New York University Experimental Theater Wong (NYUETW), University of Colorado, Drexel University, Philadelphia, San Jose State University, Irish World Academy at University of Limerick and UCD Drama Department.
Dublin born, John Scott apprenticed and danced with Dublin City Ballet. He later studied with Meredith Monk, Julian Beck and Judith Malina (Living Theatre). He performs in Oona Doherty’s ‘Hard To Be Soft’ and has also performed in Meredith Monk’s Quarry (Spoleto Festival) and for Yoshiko Chuma, Sarah Rudner, Anna Sokolow and Thomas Lehmen. His company, Irish Modern Dance Theatre, has performed throughout Ireland and internationally at Kennedy Center, Washington, Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, New York Live Arts, La MaMa, Danspace Project at St Mark’s Church, PS 122, New York and Dance Base, Edinburgh, Les Hivernales, Avignon, Tanzmesse Dusseldorf, Forum Cultural Mundial, Brazil. John is also one of the subjects of Sadlers Wells’ 52 Portraits with Jonathan Burrows, Matteo Fargion and Hugo Glendinning. He is founder of ‘Dancer from the Dance’ festival of Irish choreography in New York and Dublin.
