Cormac Mohally and the ReFramed Bursary Award

Cormac Mohally, who is Artistic Director of Cork Circus Factory and a circus polymath, has had a passion for Circus from a young age, and since training at the Belfast Circus School in ’99 – ’00 has made Circus his career. From performing solo shows on the streets of Cork, he went on to win the Street Performance World Championship in 2013, as one half of comedy duo, Lords of Strut.

The pandemic has shone a light on how Cormac values his role in society, and how restrictions can present new solutions and creative ideas previously untenable become viable. From the beginning of Lockdown he began to document and photograph the experience he was having of his city as he did his daily exercise, developing ways of staying fit and using the landscape as the framework for his movement. He has developed 4 movement routes (North, South, East, West) from and around Firkin Crane within a 2km zone and offered “Running of the Dancers” workshops engaging with the city landscape through movement to change gait, height and tempo, creating a living “running-dance” mythology. Cormac ran two of his workshops in October, but these were delayed due to Level 5 Restrictions, he hopes to pick up and start afresh in the new year.

Cormac says This Lockdown was very different than the last. He had re-framed his life, so he just kept doing what he was doing, just with less people around. Circus Factory stayed open for limited member training so that kept him and others sane.

The interruption did stop the workshops, but it allowed him to change it to the day time. He made the rookie mistake during August that it would be dark in the evening and a little bit depressing and cold. He is planning on restarting the workshops in January, calling them Re-Running of the Dancers

Ever resourceful, and needing to adapt plans once again due to Covid-19 restrictions, once again,  Cormac came up with a January challenge Walking of  the Dancers. This is a chance to slow down, to keep fit by walking, you can join in too, see his challenge here and just use the hashtag #walkingofthedancers
