Natural Body Movement and Trained Body Movement

Natural Body Movement may incorporate some of the very early infant movements in the womb and later on as we learn to work with gravity and come to standing. Whatever we may call it; there are natural and spontaneous movements that we all know from very early in our lives. As we grow and learn, these early movements get overlaid or enhanced by the many movement techniques available to us now. This workshop will explore seeing where the natural and more learned dance or movement techniques meet, partially meet or even conflict with each other.

Joan Davis has been exploring the nature of creativity, particularly from a body based perspective, for over 40 years. She pioneered contemporary dance in Ireland in the 70s & 80s and has experimented with collaborative art as a professional artist and therapist.

From 1996, when she moved to Wicklow, she developed the arts practice and performance offerings of Maya Lila which was based on bringing Authentic Movement into performance. She published two books on this process in 2007.

Joan is a Body-Mind Centering® Practitioner, has studied Authentic Movement with Janet Adler, and Voice Work with Chloe Goodchild and Rajeswar Bhattacharya. She is a Hakomi Sensorimotor Trauma Psychotherapist.

She continues to study developmental processes as well as embryology and early infant trauma. Joan has undertaken trainings in Dynamic Attachment Repair Experiences (DARE) with Dr. Diane Poole Heller in Europe. She continues her studies with trainings in HANDLE an holistic approach to neuro developmental healing and repatterning.

In 2012 Joan offered a four year somatic training called ORIGINS which covered the journey from preconception to standing.

In 2013 Mary Wycherley, a dance filmmaker based in Limerick, Ireland, was funded to make a film of the work of Maya Lila. This film, called ‘In the Bell’s Shadow’ has been screened nationally and internationally since it premiered in 2015.

Joan offers ongoing one to one somatic therapy sessions as well as her group work and solo retreats. Her most recent publication (2018) is the journey of ORIGINS, a journey from preconception to standing.
