2012 is the Centenary of Joan Denise Moriarty, who was responsible for the establishment of the Firkin Crane as a centre for dance and who was fundamental to the development of ballet in Ireland. The exhibition will shine a light on this unique building, which owes its very existence to her vision and energy.
The exhibition is being created by the staff at Firkin Crane in association with Cork School of Dance. Newly discovered archive material will be presented and, using state of the art technology and colourful displays, will demonstrate Miss Moriarty’s innovative creativity; the difficulties she encountered and how she surmounted them.
A programme of performances, demonstrations, workshops and classes will provide another dimension to Firkin Crane’s tribute to Joan Denise Moriarty. Always an innovator, she would have approved of the unique atmosphere and highly original presentation.

Joan Denise Moriarty made Cork the centre of Irish ballet for almost half a century. Cork Ballet Company presented the great classics and her own original works foralmost half a century.
