Fort Camden (Meagher) Arts Project
Programme of Artistic Interventions and Responses to the site
This project is funded by Cork County Council
Artists are invited to submit expressions of interest and outline proposals for a series of artistic commissions relating to Fort Camden in County Cork.
Fort Camden (also known as Fort Meagher) is widely regarded as an outstanding example of 19th century coastal fortification. It is located on Ram’s Head near the village of Crosshaven overlooking the entrance to Cork Harbour. Its sister fort, Fort Davis(formerly Carlisle), stands on the opposite shore.
As a fortification of one of the Irish Treaty Ports, Camden Fort was occupied by British military until July 1938 when it was officially handed over to the Irish defence forces. It was subsequently renamed Fort Meagher.
Cork County Council has taken ownership of the entire site which covers some 49 acres and is working with statutory and local interests to develop access and a long term development plan.
The Fort Camden Artistic Programme forms part of a developing strategy to raise public awareness about the historical importance of this fortification and its place in local and national heritage.
The commission programme aims to realize up to five artist led projects that will be directly inspired by the architecture, environment and/or history of the site.
We are particularly interested in proposals from
* Creative Artists of all disciplines whose work addresses or engages with the natural/built environment.
* CreativeArtists whose work may engage with the military and social history of this site
Artists are encouraged to especially consider ways in which their proposed work can engage with the public. We will consider all contexts in which work may be presented, for example, permanent, temporary installation, web based, publication, etc. Proposals for temporary or off site locations should consider methodologies for creating a permanent record of the work.
Proposals from artists working in all artforms are eligible. Collaborative and/or interdisciplinary proposals will also be considered.
The commission process will take place in two stages. Stage One is an open call for proposals. From this a shortlist will be drawn up. Some or all of the shortlisted artists will be invited to submit fully developed and budgeted proposals. (Cork County Council may decide at this point to reserve a number of shortlisted proposals for development to commission in a further phase of the project, if appropriate.) Artists shortlisted for stage 2 will receive a small budget for expenses in developing proposals to second stage
A maximum budget of €10,000 inclusive of all costs may be awarded for each commission.
Camden Fort is currently closed to the public. Two site visits are scheduled to assist artists making proposals. Each tour of the site will last approximately 2.5 hours including time for discussion. Tours will be led by a member of the local Camden committee assisted by a member of the Council steering group for the project.
Sites visit times
* Friday, June 25th 2.30 p.m. (Meet at Entrance)
* Tuesday June 29th 11.00 a.m. (Meet at Entrance)

Background information.
Fort Camden (Meagher) is recognised internationally as one of the world's finest examples of a Palmerston Fort.
Fortifications at the site date from as early as 1550 but the present construction owes its existence to the Royal Commission report of 1860 which recommended the construction of Camden, Carlyle and Westmoreland forts. Situated at the western entrance to Cork Harbour, Camden stands about 200 feet above sea level. The fort area is honeycombed with underground passages and emplacements including a large magazine. It has a magnificent tunnel, engineered to house the fixed torpedo invented by Louis Philip Brennan.
Groups of forts built during the Victorian period on the report of the 1860 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom were called Palmerston Forts after the then Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston. During this time, forts were built all over the UK, including Plymouth, Pembroke, Portland, Dover, Chatham and Medway. Unlike Fort Carlisle, Charles Fort or Fort Templebreedy, Fort Camden is acknowledged as being the only true Palmerstonian fort in Cork and one of the world’s finest examples of a coastal artillery fort.

Aerowaves is a Europe-wide project started in 1996, which brings together dance specialists from 32 countries to look at the work of young choreographers. For the last 14 years this has resulted in ten performance opportunities at The Place in London as part of the Resolution! festival as well as many other informal presentations around Europe.
For the first time in 2009, over 70 additional performances were confirmed in 21 other European cities: Moscow, Oslo, Tallinn, Vilnius, Copenhagen, Dublin, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Prague, Poznan, Warsaw, Zurich, Lausanne, Bassano del Grappa, Rome, Porto, Limassol, Osijek and Zagreb. We anticipate a similar number of opportunities in 2010. Application for 2011 is open to any artists in geographical Europe (including the UK), although performances will not be offered in their country of residence.
It's for emerging choreographers and companies who have not yet done much touring abroad.
Artists complete an online application by 20 September 2010 and send 2 identical DVDs to London of the work they wish to present. They may now add performance dates for the proposed work under ‘Candidates’ in the Aerowaves calendar. The Aerowaves partners meet to assess the DVDs in late October and their advice helps the Presenters in choosing works for the following year. The performance opportunities above are confirmed; however, each year other informal opportunities arise and work has been presented through Aerowaves in the majority of the countries represented at the meeting.

* Friday, June 25th 2.30 p.m. (Meet at Entrance)
* Tuesday June 29th 11.00 a.m. (Meet at Entrance)
