Aloys Fleischmann - Music for The Ballet
26 Apr 2010 -

Tickets: €

For 45 years Aloys Fleischmann co-operated with Joan Denise Moriarty to foster ballet in Ireland. To honour Fleischmann’s contribution to dance, Cork City Ballet, in association with the Firkin Crane, presents a centenary celebration of one of Ireland’s finest composers. A special exhibition The Music for the Ballet will take place in the Firkin Crane in April 2010.
Directed by Alan Foley and Paul McCarthy, the company is delighted to announce that Prima Ballerina Elena Glurdjidze from English National Ballet and her partner (also a principal with ENB) Arionel Vargas will perform the Black Swan pas de deux in anticipation of CBC’s forthcoming production of Swan Lake in November 2010.
Guzel Atymtayeva and Hannah Windows will star in an adaptation of Professor Fleischmann’s ballet The Golden Bell of Ko. This version is specially choreographed by Russian Ballet star Yuri Demakov, who will also dance in the production.
Leigh Alderson, a principal with Cork City Ballet - who trained at London’s Royal Ballet School - will perform Alan Foley’s new version of The Dying Swan, and students from Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa’s Diploma in Dance course, the Irish National Youth Ballet and the Cork School of Dance will feature in the show.
Renowned international choreographer (and former dancer with Irish Theatre Ballet, artistic director and choreographer to Irish National Ballet) Domy Reiter Soffer will open the exhibition Music for the Ballet on the night. The exhibition was prepared from the Fleischmann and Moriarty archives by Anne and Maeve Fleischmann, together with a committee of former Cork Ballet Company dancers; it was designed by Max Fleischmann and documents how the music for the dance arose as well as the performances of the ballets with specially commissioned music.
Speaking at the recent launch, Artistic Director Alan Foley said, “Cork City Ballet is proud to be involved in the centenary celebrations of Aloys Fleischmann, and help mark his magnificent contribution to ballet in Ireland”.
