Rhithim Rhythm
26 Sep 2009 -
08.00 pm
Tickets: €16/13
Printz Dance Project, in collaboration with Siamsa Tire, the Irish National Folk Theatre, return to the Firkin Crane with a heady mix of traditional and contemporary dance.Choreographed by Artistic Directors, Stacey Printz (PDP) and Jonathan Kelliher (NFT), Rithim Rhythm is crammed with Irish step, beat boxing and funky moves. Eleven dancers take to the stage in an exhilarating 70 minutes of vignettes, culminating in a unique collaboration which sees Irish step and modern dance effortlessly fuse and sizzle.
PDP, founded in 1998 by Stacey Printz, takes a fresh approach to blending movement styles, seamlessly unifying intense athleticism with fluid articulation. Based in San Francisco, PDP have performed and toured throughout the US and Europe, in addition to their annual home season at the Cowell Theatre in San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center. In 2007 they undertook a short tour in Ireland, performing to hugely enthusiastic audiences in Cork and Galway and West Kerry.
Siamsa Tíre, most widely known for its performances investigating traditional artforms, has been involved in a number of collaborative works in recent years, and has worked with contemporary choreographers such as Mary Nunan, Cindy Cummins and Sue Ellen McCarthy. Rithim Rhythm demonstrates the Irish National Folk Theatre’s commitment to the ongoing development of its practice.
The collaboration between the two companies began over two years ago when PDP travelled to Ireland to work with the NFT’s performing company with a view to creating a piece of work which fused the distinct styles of both traditions. Subsequent visits by the Irish group to the US, culminated in the premiere of Rithim Rhythm (funded by Culture Ireland) in the Cowell Theater in San Francisco last November, where the work was greeted with acclaim by both audience and media.
Audience members are also invited to attend a post-show discussion at each of the venues, where the members of both companies discuss the genesis of the collaboration and what the experience has brought to their individual practices.

The Irish Premiere of Rithim Rhythm kicks off in Tralee as part of Culture Night on 25 September at 8.30pm, before touring to Cork (Firkin Crane), Belfast (Grand Opera House), and Limerick (Daghdha Space).

The Firkin Crane has gone through many guises since it was erected as part of the Butter Market in the 19th century: the current rotunda building has been a dedicated cultural centre since the 1980’s.This unique building will be open all day as part of the event organised by Cork City Council with support from the Heritage Council and DoEHLG and media sponsorship from Cork's 96FM and the Evening Echo. For one day only, over 35 buildings will open their doors free of charge, and members of the public are allowed a glimpse of some of Cork’s most fascinating buildings, ranging from the Medieval to the Military, the Civic to the Commercial and the Educational to the Ecclesiastical.
Cork Heritage Open Day highlights the important link between events and places from Cork’s past, which are marked by a series of plaques, some functional others commemorative, but each telling a unique piece of Cork history. There is also a feature on Cork’s Historic Post boxes. These post boxes demonstrate not only the range of changes in the decorative detail of cast-iron boxes from Victorian times to the latter part of the 20th century, but also chart the political changes in the governance of Cork and Ireland.
This event is an action from the Cork City Heritage Plan 2007-2012.

George Bernard Shaw: Saint Joan
12 Jun 2010 - 13 Jun 2010
08.00 pm
Tickets: €12.50 /10
Youthful enthusiasm meets ultimate political betrayal – powerfully portrayed by the talent of the Young Gaiety Theatre Company, Cork.Saint Joan is probably the most intriguing of the Saints, shown in the numerous plays written about her, from Shakespeare to Mark Twain, and films made by such directors as Luc Besson. In 2004 she even got her own computer game. Born ca. 1420, she went out from her little village in France and changed the world, following only her inner voice. At 19 years of age, she met and made the king, and saved her home country. Sadly, she was not politically minded: when the powers to be decided that she had become too famous, they set up a desperate trial to get rid of her. Ultimately, she could only be condemned for the fact that she wore men’s clothing. On the 30th May 1431, she was burned on the stake for being a heretic. In June 1456, the trial was declared false, and Joan’s name was cleared. 464 years later, she became an official saint. The play follows Joan’s success, her courage, her passion, and her final burning at the stake.
The character of Saint Joan is traditionally played by actresses much older than the actual Joan, as it is considered one of the most challenging parts for female actors. The youthfulness of Katie Melia, Katie Oaks and Rachel Feeney in the part of Joan makes it easy to understand why the powerful leaders of the time were enchanted by her.
George Bernard Shaw's play, based on the life and trial of Joan of Arc, dramatises what is known of her life based on the substantial records of her trial. He wrote in his preface to the play:"There are no villains in the piece. Crime, like disease, is not interesting: it is something to be done away with by general consent, and that is all [there is] about it. It is what men do at their best, with good intentions, and what normal men and women find that they must and will do in spite of their intentions, that really concern us."

Directed by Alan Foley and Paul McCarthy, the company is delighted to announce that Prima Ballerina Elena Glurdjidze from English National Ballet and her partner (also a principal with ENB) Arionel Vargas will perform the Black Swan pas de deux in anticipation of CBC’s forthcoming production of Swan Lake in November 2010.
Guzel Atymtayeva and Hannah Windows will star in an adaptation of Professor Fleischmann’s ballet The Golden Bell of Ko. This version is specially choreographed by Russian Ballet star Yuri Demakov, who will also dance in the production.
Leigh Alderson, a principal with Cork City Ballet - who trained at London’s Royal Ballet School - will perform Alan Foley’s new version of The Dying Swan, and students from Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa’s Diploma in Dance course, the Irish National Youth Ballet and the Cork School of Dance will feature in the show.
Renowned international choreographer (and former dancer with Irish Theatre Ballet, artistic director and choreographer to Irish National Ballet) Domy Reiter Soffer will open the exhibition Music for the Ballet on the night. The exhibition was prepared from the Fleischmann and Moriarty archives by Anne and Maeve Fleischmann, together with a committee of former Cork Ballet Company dancers; it was designed by Max Fleischmann and documents how the music for the dance arose as well as the performances of the ballets with specially commissioned music.
Speaking at the recent launch, Artistic Director Alan Foley said, “Cork City Ballet is proud to be involved in the centenary celebrations of Aloys Fleischmann, and help mark his magnificent contribution to ballet in Ireland”.

ASANGO BRINGS A BOMBSHELL TO TOWN
Jasango Theatre wowed audiences last year with the Irish Premiere of BOMBSHELLS, a wild and passionate comedy by Joanna Murray-Smith, featuring Angela Ryan and Jasmin Finn and directed by George B. Miller. Following a successful run at Galway’s Bank Of Ireland Theatre, Bombshells went on to be one of the highlights of the Theatre Stage Mindfield programme at Electric Picnic 2009. Such was the enthusiastic response to this sharp script, that it seemed only fitting to undertake a national tour.
Bombshells is a rip-roaring, explosive and hilarious evening spent with several generations of women on the edge. From the fame-seeking teenager to the frenetic young mother to the simmering widow and the exultant, terrified bride, these women will surprise and delight you in this series of vivid monologues
“A rare combination of comedy, truth and rapture”-- The Times
“Jaw-droppingly good” -- Sunday Times
“Beautifully judged in their mixture of comedy and depression” -- The Guardian
Written for performer Caroline O’Connor, Bombshells premiered at the Melbourne Theatre Company, Australia in 2001. In 2004, the production, starring O’Connor, was one of the hits of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, transferring to the Arts Theatre in London. Playwright Joanna Murray-Smith’s plays have been produced throughout Australia and the world; her newest play, The Female Of The Species, received it’s UK premiere in London’s West End in 2008. Of Bombshells, she says “Where once women went mad suppressing their ambitions or dreams, they now drive themselves mad trying to fulfill them all simultaneously…humour, in the end, is our saviour.”
In keeping with Jasango’s commitment to collaboration, this production showcases smart, haunting music by the Go Away Birds, and the evocative artwork of painter Sueanne O’Halloran
Jasango Theatre was founded by Galway theatre artists Angela Ryan and Jasmin Finn this past spring as a collaborative, multi-disciplinary company, bringing together musicians, visual artists and theatre practitioners to create fresh, multi-dimensional theatrical events.
“Everyone can identify with these characters”, says actor/producer Angela Ryan “– anyone who has been or knows a mother, a bride, a teenager or a widow can connect on an emotional level with these stories. The situations they find themselves are hugely comedic and both women and men have had tears rolling down their faces in recognition of events and attitudes that they know only too well!”

Whatever their other concerns, with Go Away Birds, they’re keeping things as simple as possible, mainly just Michael’s acoustic guitar and Catherine’s beautiful, pure and clear voice. Go Away Birds have put out two four-track EPs, drawing from a deep well of songs recorded last year in Michael’s Glasgow living room.
Sueanne O’Halloran (Visual Artist) is a wholly self-taught artist, based in Milltown, Dublin, but originally hailing from North Kerry. Sueanne works in watercolours, and is currently exhibiting at The Blue Loft in Ranelagh. Open Niche
01 Apr 2010 -
08.00 pm
Tickets: €12/8

Choroeographer Fearghus Ó Conchúir made Niche, at the tail-end of Ireland’s economic boom, when cranes still dominated Dublin’s skyline. This exciting dance piece was made possible by the support all those optimists who donated €100, then was conceived, rehearsed and performed on the building sites of the Dublin Docklands during Ó Conchúir’s residency with Dublin City Council.
Now Fearghus is bringing Niche around Ireland, opening the piece up to the challenges the country faces in the wake of economic collapse. In the face of such gloom, Niche celebrates resilience, resourcefulness and the satisfaction of building connections with others.
Niche features a cast of four experienced performers, who between them, have danced with renowned companies such as DV8, Pina Bausch, and Sasha Walz. What distinguishes Open Niche is that for each performance the cast will be joined by local performers who bring a new flavour to the work giving each audience a unique experience. Those performers include the Siamsa Tíre professional company, Dublin Youth Dance Company, students of University of Limerick’s MA in Dance, participants in Daghdha Dance Company’s Mentoring Programme and participants in the Chance to Dance programme at the Firkin Crane, Shandon, Cork
Ó Conchúir has made a reputation for himself bringing dance to unusual locations. His RTÉ Dance on the Box film, Match, directed by Dearbhla Walsh, provoked radio talk-show interest for its use of Croke Park for the muscular male duet. He has danced on the building site of the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, made a public art commission for Fingal County Council set in the area’s Martello Towers and organised a day of dance in an empty Woolworths in East London.
Open Niche is produced by Richard Wakely in association with the Project Arts Centre with project funding from the Arts Council of Ireland. Niche was originally produced by Fearghus Ó Conchúir in association with Project Arts Centre and with the support of the optimists who each donated 100 euro.
Choreographer Fearghus O'Conchuir, in association with the Firkin Crane's Chance to Dance programme, is offering young people in Cork the chance to be part of his contemporary dance performance.
The piece, called Niche, is about finding your own place in a group or in a city that's changing around you all the time. The piece was performed in Dublin and Liverpool last year.
In March/April 2010, Fearghus is bringing the piece to the Firkin Crane in Cork and he's looking for a group of talented and committed young people to join the professional dancers on stage for part of the performance. Imagination and commitment is more important than previous dance experience.
Fearghus visited Cork in December to start the process of finding this group of young people. In early Spring 2010, he will work intensively with the group to prepare them for the performance that will take place in the Firkin Crane on 1 April 2010.

Prof. Alkis Raftis, President of the International Dance Council, UNESCO, Paris.
The future of dance lies where there are persons who do not dance.
These belong to two categories: those who simply did not learn, and those who think that they are not able to dance. They represent the greatest challenge for the dance teacher's profession.
In line with UNESCO's struggle against prejudice and discrimination, we are trying to expand the boundaries of dance and to change the current perception of what a dancer is.
Dance performances are not necessarily exhibitions of extreme physicality, accurate precision, or bursting emotion - they can be celebrations of interaction between performers. We can enrich dance concerts with dancers, singers, actors, narrators, mimes, acrobats etc., of all ages and all degrees of ability.
Bringing the 'excluded' into dance is a moral duty, but also opens a great door in times of economic crisis and unemployment. In every country there are millions of persons with physical or mental disabilities. We believe they are ready to dance.
They will create jobs to thousands of dance teachers. They can be assisted by the Ministry of Health, whose budget is many times bigger than that of the Ministry of Culture.
Integrating marginalized persons into the practice of dance is as important as integrating them into the workforce.
CID holds to the philosophy that everyone can dance. Let us include all members of society into our classes and our performances.

Dance Research Forum Ireland’s 3rd International Conference
24 Jun 2010 - 27 Jun 2010
All day
Tickets: €
The conference, in keeping with the aims and objectives of Dance Research Forum Ireland, provides a platform for both dance academics and dance artists in Ireland and abroad. Included in its programme are academic-based paper presentations, practice-based research presentations, lecture demonstrations, dance workshops, a student poster exhibition, and dance performance contributions. The conference explores improvisation in dance research and practice. What is improvisation and how relevant is it to dance research and practice? Is improvisation a subjective experience; a creative tool; a mode of performance - or all or none of the above? How is improvisation transmitted? What methodologies or techniques are used or are being developed; and how is improvisation documented? What or who are the primary and secondary sources?
Broadly defined as 'spontaneous composition', improvisation has always been an integral part of dance practice. The aim of this conference is to identify and document how and where improvisation has been, and is being, used in dance practice; and its relevance and importance in dance research and dance practice as research.
Jean Cocteau: The Human Voice
29 Jan 2010 - 31 Jan 2010
08.00 pm
Tickets: €12.50 /10
A powerful, exciting contemplation of the virtues of interpersonal communication – and the dramatic consequences of broken intimacy. George Hanover rises to the challenge of Jean Cocteau’s ‘training-play for one actress’. Emotionally charged, sensual, dramatic – one woman and a telephone turn a stage into all the world.Passion might have been the buzz-word of the first decade of the 21st century. We were passionate about business, passionate about handbags, passionate about cars. Business seminars were full of passion, and our leaders passionate about what they are doing, to motivate and influence us, their followers. But passion for a partner, for a romantic relationship, seems to have moved into the realm of mental illness, into obsession. Treatable with anti-psychotic drugs, maybe seen as an anxiety disorder, romantic passion has become a case for the pharmaceutical companies.
Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice leads us into the 1930’s, a time were arts were bursting with possibility, Edith Piaf enthralled the world with her dynamic voice, and phone conversations were a novelty, hazardous and unreliable as a means of human conversation.
George Hanover as performer and Stella Majewsky as director question the notion of a dispassionate approach to life. During rehearsal, the constant question was whether we, from today’s point of view, can be on the passionate woman’s side, or do we see her as ridiculous, obsessed and mentally ill?
"Women oppose change, receive passively, and add nothing of their own," Sigmund Freud wrote in 1925.
Tornado Theatre Company is a Multicultural Theatre Company, currently based in The Firkin Crane. It consists of actors from Ireland, Poland, Germany and Brazil. Partly recruited from the Gaiety School of Acting Adult Theatre Company, it aims to be a true ensemble company. Stella Majewsky, Artistic Director of Tornado, passionately and obsessively believes in theatre.

Maeve Higgins : Blabbing Away
05 Feb 2010 - 06 Feb 2010
08.00 pm
Tickets: €18
SO MANY PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR MAEVE BLAB THAT FRIDAY'S SHOW IS SOLD OUT! SO WE HAVE ADDED AN EXTRA SHOW ON SATURDAY NIGHT ... BOOK NOW!
Maeve loves to blab and is pleased to have lots of new things to blab about to you!
It’s hard to think of examples but she will definitely try to
1. present you with an evening of glowing fun, and
2. not bore you, and
3. include at least one catchphrase in each show, eg: ‘What’s good for the goose is good for the gander’ (and her sister has given her a great recipe)
Since beginning stand up five years ago, Maeve Higgins has performed in comedy festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Melbourne, Adelaide and Kilkenny. She rapidly rose to an uncomfortable level of notoriety on Irish television in the past few years, on the most watched comedy show in the country, RTE's Naked Camera. She is also a regular contributor to the Ray D'arcy Show on Today FM.
"Higgins is rarer than a blessing of unicorns…she is original and relatively calm, her observations are pithy, her wit delicate, her persona oddly alluring and deftly honest." The Irish Times, September 2009
“Throughout the whole hour the room is filled with laughter at Maeve’s risqué and highly intelligent act." The Irish Independent,
‘Charming and iconoclastic Irish stand-up’ The Age, Melbourne 2008
"Higgins is a great relief from the big loud boys and will win many people over with her quietly charming quality of comedy." The Skinny, 2007
"Maeve Higgins is here to demonstrate how to do Irish charm. She’s not daft, she doesn’t lay it on with a trowel, dimpling and twinkling away, hers is probably the most natural and uncontrived performance you could wish for." Chortle, 2007
Tickets will be on sale before Christmas and would make a very nice Christmas present. Please book early as it was a sell out last year. Tickets from the Firkin Crane (021) 4507487 .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Phase 5 Sharing
30 Nov 2009 -
1.00 pm
Tickets: €Free
The BLANK CANVAS residents for the month of November were Phluxus Dance Collective, from Brisbane, Australia. During that time, Nerida Matthaei, Chafia Brookes and Skye Sewell - independent dance artists but devising and creating collaboratively since 2006 - were working on a visceral dance work exploring the concept of Boiling Point: “A function of transformation, high-impact, transcendence, a moment in time, containment on the edge of explosion, agitation, at the point of panic, your blood is boiling and the situation becomes critical, pushed to 100 degrees…” writes Nerida Matthaei.
It had been intended to present their newly created work, together with excerpts from their acclaimed dance theatre piece The Machine That Carries The Soul, as part of the mini-festival of international dance, along with Deseo by Nemian Danza from Mexico City. However, due to the emergency closure, this performance has been postponed.
Instead, everyone is welcome to share a lunchtime presentation of Phluxus' work to date.
Phluxus Dance Collective’s sharing will be a highlight of BLANK CANVAS 2009.

03.00 pm and 08.00pm
Tickets: €12/8
The BLANK CANVAS residents this month are Phluxus Dance Collective, from Brisbane, Australia. Nerida Matthaei, Chafia Brookes and Skye Sewell - independent dance artists but devising and creating collaboratively since 2006 - are currently working on creating a visceral dance work exploring the concept of Boiling Point: “A function of transformation, high-impact, transcendence, a moment in time, containment on the edge of explosion, agitation, at the point of panic, your blood is boiling and the situation becomes critical, pushed to 100 degrees…” writes Nerida Matthaei.
Phluxus will present their newly created work together with excerpts from their acclaimed dance theatre piece The Machine That Carries The Soul. Described as “beautiful in its simplicity and intensity” and “wonderfully imaginative” this work delves into the subconscious as three women encounter their bodies' physical manifestations of emotional experience.
Phluxus Dance Collective’s performance will be a highlight of BLANK CANVAS 2009.

Jack the Ripper - Voices of the VictimsThat got your attention, didn't it?
No matter how long ago it happened, we still have a morbid fascination with the ultimate ‘who dunnit’ of the infamous Jack.
This is an original play, based on the deeds of Jack the Ripper, performed on Hallowe’en by the Luvius Theatre Group.
But, rather than being all about the infamous Jack, the story concentrates on the murdered prostitutes - the ‘Unfortunates’ as they were called back then; who they were and why they were there…. Too often, with all the salacious tales and gory details, the victims themselves are forgotten and become merely statistics in the background. This play will give the ladies their voices, their stories and their chance to become three-dimensional.
Come on, come see us …. You know you want to, don’t you …….

Jimmy Crowley is a living legend in Irish music, a central figure in the worldwide folk scene since his debut album The Boys of Fairhill. No-one sounds like him, and few can match him for sheer joy, humour and the storytelling craft which he brings to his repertoire of songs.Jimmy draws on many traditions to fashion his unique performance style and repertoire, with funny, touching and beautiful songs, essential affidavits of Cork Culture, where the musical richness mirrors the city's cultural diversity - a great trad heritage as well as a legacy of both music-hall vaudeville and high art song.
Many old street names like Cat Lane, Phair’s Cross and Connor’s Glen are almost gone from living memory, as are the colourful individuals who inhabited them. Jimmy gives them life again in our imagination, weaving stories about the characters, maritime exploits and daily life in between the ballads and ditties.

The Coast of Malibar
The Armoured Car
The Ballad of Christy Ring

When it hatches its occupant’s ‘quack’ sounds more like a ‘honk’! Although taken aback, Ida quickly warms to the new arrival's gentleness and lovely qualities. But her sisters mock her mercilessly, calling her ’UGLY’ and the only friend she makes in the farmyard is the suspiciously friendly CAT, who invites her to ‘dinner’. Feeling completely alone and outcast, ugly flees the farmyard. Ida, devastated, launches a search party. Somehow she survives the bleak winter, and in spring the returning swans guide IDA to her long-lost daughter for a reunion and triumphant return to the farmyard. This heartwarming re-telling of a traditional tale is a feel-good story for the start of the summer holidays.

All of the students on the dance course performed with Cork City Ballet in the company’s production of The Nutcracker at the Cork Opera House in November 2009, and in April 2010 they perform in Music for the Ballet – a tribute performance for Aloys Fleischmann’s centenary celebrations.
Earlier in April they studied for a week with some of the most salubrious names in the dance world including Bolshoi trained Yuri Demakov, Prima Ballerina Chika Temma and Guzel Atymtayeva.
Former students of this course are currently dancing all over the world, and more have gone on to appear in West End productions such as Chicago, West Side Story, Mamma Mia and Wicked, as well as becoming teachers, choreographers, designers and dance directors.

One Book, One Shandon
01 Apr 2009 -
09.30 am
Tickets: €Free
One Book One Shandon is a family literacy initiative organised by Shandon/Cathdral Road/Blackpool Community Education Network in association with the staff of St Mary's Road Library. Students in local schools began an exciting journey by reading Ice Man, written by Michael Smith. The book tells the story of Tom Crean, the famous Antarctic Explorer. Once Crean's acts of bravery have inspired them, the students continue with an adventure of their own, exploring the world of the Antarctic through books and the Internet.
Projects, art work and creative writing enable the students to develop and improve their literacy skills while expanding their knowledge of Crean and Ireland's other great Antarctic explorers.
The Firkin Crane hosts a presentation of the resulting performances by local schools, as part of the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival.
Come and see The Igloo Project, created in partnership with Cork Community Art Link, from over 2,000 milk containers.
