Legitimate Bodies Dance Company
Legitimate Bodies Dance Company, Co-directed by artistic duo Nick Bryson and Cristina Goletti, is one of the most thrilling new dance initiative in Ireland. The Firkin Crane was delighted to have them as residents on the BLANK CANVAS dance residency.
Nick and Cristina met on the Daghdha Dance Company’s mentoring programme in Limerick and started a choreographic collaboration that ended up with an invitation to perform at the international dance festival “Performatica” in Mexico. Consequently their second piece was performed as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival 2007 at the DanceHouse to great success of audience and critics and has been supported by Dance Ireland under the Incubator Programme. At the beginning of October 2007 they founded Legitimate Bodies Dance Company that became the company in residence at the Birr Theatre and Arts Centre, in Birr, Co.Offaly. With the support of Offaly County Council and The Arts Council, they furthered their artistic practise and initiated different dance educational and outreach programmes for children, youth and community, creating a momentum for contemporary dance in the Midlands.
Since their establishment, they toured to various venues in Ireland, Italy and Northern Ireland and they received support from Culture Ireland and the Irish Embassy to return to Mexico for two years in a row for a series of performances and workshops. The company was also invited to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2008 to feature in a curated evening of dance with the comedic duo “Hanging in There”, with Damian Punch. Performed at Dance Base, the series of performances was a great success and was critically acclaimed with numerous further international engagements late in 2008 and in 2009 including Aerowaves Dance Festival at The Robin Howard Theatre London, Dance House Limassol, Auditorium Theatre, Rome as well as the European Parliament in Brussels.
In collaboration with Damian Punch, Nick and Cristina remounted Hanging in There previously shown at Dublin Fringe 2007 along with another foundation work Lingering on A Diagonal. As one of the newest dance companies in Ireland, Legitimate Bodies have been supported by Culture Ireland to tour Mexico and Ireland with a new full-length trio, Touching Distance.
Bryson and Goletti’s first collaboration History is Still a Game was presented with great success at the Performatica Festival in Mexico 2007. Their second piece, a collaboration with musician Nick Bankes, Lingering on a Diagonal, was supported by Dance Ireland under the incubation period choreographic scheme and performed as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival 2007. Since then the piece has been shown in various venues in Ireland and in Rome.
The aim of the company is to present refreshing and exhilarating work that is accessible, provocative and real as well as provide dance-based services for the community and youth.
