Catherine Young
Catherine Young has been dancer in residence with Kerry County Council since 2005 working closely with Siamsa Tíre. She holds a Certificate in Dance from City College of San Francisco, a Masters in Contemporary Dance Performance from University of Limerick and has been working as a dancer, choreographer and teacher since her return to Ireland four years ago.Catherine spent 8 years in San Francisco training/performing in theatre/dance with: PURE Dance Company, City College Repertory Dance Company, American Conservatory Theatre & Printz Dance Project. She also trained in African dance in the US and West Africa with Ousseni Sako (Salia ni Seydou Dance Company) and Lacina Coulibaly (Kongo Ba Teria Dance Company).
Catherine took part in the Irish Choreographer’s New Work Platform at the Firkin Crane under the mentorship of Wendy Houston. In 2007 she was awarded Ireland’s first ‘Per Cent for Arts’ Dance Commission in March 2007 creating Athmhachnaimh. In 2008 she was awarded a bursary from the Arts Council to pursue her choreographic endeavors both in contemporary and African dance and to support her to take part in Blank Canvas.
