The Firkin Crane

Carlos Cortes

Carlos Cortes has worked successfully since the 80’s in the fields of performing and visual arts. His work has been performed, exhibited and published and in several European countries and the USA.

Combining Dance, movement-based work and elements of visual arts he works on projects that are nearly always site specific, with a strong interest in landscape, architecture and participatory issues. He investigates how movement can be a liberating force, how it can help people to engage with their physical environment, and how audience and performers can become equally involved in dynamics that change the way space is perceived and/or inhabited.

Sometimes these experiences can generate 2D and 3D visuals, (action paintings, dancing sculptures) that can become installations with a life of it's own beyond the performance time span.

He has , carried out projects and commissions for venues and festivals such as the Hayward Gallery, Kew Gardens (London), Oryel Mostyn (Llandudno), Royal Accademy of Arts (Edinburgh), Galleri (Carmarthen), Strange creatures Festival (Hertogenbosch- Holland), Time and Space (Paide-Estonia), Festival Periferias (Huesca, Sp), Madrid Dance Marathon (Madrid,Sp), Festival de Valderrobres (Teruel, Sp), Trayectos Zaragoza (Zaragoza, Sp), CDAN -Centro de Arte y Naturaleza- (Huesca Sp), etc...

He has also designed sets and/or costumes for dance and theatre productions in Spain, Italy and the UK working for CND (Compania Nacional de Danza ESp), Ballet de Zaragoza, Balletto de Torino Cantro Dramatico de Aragon, Isleworth Actors Company, etc…and directors/choreographers like Derek Dean, Harold King, Nacho Duato, Mauro Galindo, Paolo Mohovich, Amador Castilla, etc…,

He has worked in a wide range of educational settings in museums, art galleries, college, schools, young offenders institution, hospital, nursery etc…
