Welcome to Firkin Crane, Cork’s Home of Dance

On the 29 of April, as every year since 1982, World Dance Day, an initiative of the International Dance Council [CID] UNESCO, is celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts. Each year a dance artist is asked to create a message for the Day. For 2014, Mourad Merzouki, Director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Créteil, France, has created a video piece:

In the spirit of "Make, See, Join In Dance", Firkin Crane, the home of dance in Cork, presents Moving Together, an exhibition of dance on film celebrating the variety, creativity and expressiveness of non-professional dancers across Ireland, demonstrating the stories and experiences that can be communicated by moving bodies of different ages and skills.

Dance isn’t only about the training you’ve done.
It’s also what you express with the body you have.

Fearghus Ó Conchuir, Firkin Crane's Curator of Dance

Supported by the Arts Council, Cork City Council and Firkin Crane, dancer and choreographer Laura Murphy has been named Cork’s Dancer in Residence at Firkin Crane for 2013/2014. The aim of the award is to expand the professional practice of dance in Cork and this is the second year in a row that Laura has received this prestigious award.

As part of this year's residency, Laura initiated the community-based project A Dance Concerto with composer Irene Buckley and dancers Helga Deasy and Siobhan Ní Dhuinnín. As the year goes by, people who become involved will be supported to collaborate with professional dance artists and composers to develop a live performance for June 2014.
